Research Interests

Blood Donation Research

The ultimate aim of this work is to support ongoing efforts to sustain an adequate blood supply by enhancing the donation experience.  We are interested in gaining a better understanding of how to improve donor recruitment and to increase donor retention.

Recruitment of Blood Donors

  • Psychosocial predictors of donation behavior (e.g., fear, self-efficacy, attitudes, donor identity)
  • Promotion of donation behavior (e.g., pre-donation education materials, coping strategies to attenuate donation reactions)

Retention of Blood Donors

  • Psychosocial and physiological predictors of donor return behavior (e.g.,physical reactions, self-efficacy, satisfaction)
  • Coping strategies to attenuate donation reactions
  • Post-donation interventions to enhance donor return (e.g., motivational interviewing)

Pain and Cardiovascular Psychophysiology Research

We have known for some time that high blood pressure is associated with decreased sensitivity to pain.  There is further evidence that factors such as a family history of hypertension and increased cardiovascular reactivity to physical and psychological stressors are also related to decreased pain ratings. These findings suggest that an increased nociceptive threshold may serve as a behavioral marker of hypertensive risk and that the mechanism(s) of this effect may provide insight into the pathophysiology of essential hypertension. Accordingly, our research on pain perception examines:

  1. mechanisms of decreased pain perception in hypertensives and offspring of hypertensives
  2. hypoalgesia as a predictor of longitudinal changes in blood pressure in individuals at high and low risk for hypertension.
