Admission Requirements

All graduate applications must be submitted electronically through the Graduate College. 

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • GPA (or equivalent) of 3.0 or better in most recent degree program.
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) required for holders of a non-U.S. degree. The code for Ohio University is 1593.
  • Three letters of recommendation.
  • Statement of purpose that includes a clear description of research interests.
  • Transcripts
  • Resume, which must include a list of every school attended, as well as the GPA obtained at each institution.
  • English Proficiency. International students whose native language is not English also must submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS academic). To be considered official, test scores must be reported directly from the testing agency to Ohio University. A TOEFL-iBT of 80 or IELTS of 6.5 across all bands is required, along with written documentation of English speaking ability from a faculty who has spoken with the applicant by telephone or in person. Application Deadline

Students are usually admitted to begin their studies in the fall semester. (In exceptional cases, admission may be granted in the spring semester.) In order to guarantee full consideration, an application should be complete by March 1 for admission in the following fall semester.

The graduate recruitment committee will start reviewing your application once all the documents listed above have been submitted with the online application.

Special Instructions for Double Master’s Applicants

Note regarding the double master’s program with Leipzig University in Germany: Prospective students should apply by Feb. 1 to start the program in the summer. On the online application, indicate in your application your research advisor preference and that you are applying for the double master’s program. In addition, please send an email to the graduate chair of OHIO’s Chemistry & Biochemistry Department (Dr. Eric Masson) stating that you have applied to the double master’s program.
