Geography at Ohio University

The script is provided here for easy access.

Opening Scene

Geography is the study of the earth’s landscapes, peoples, places and environments. It is, quite simply, about the world in which we live.

Faculty Scene

Our faculty’s interests span the range of Human, Environmental, and Physical Geography. Diverse specialties and active research agendas inform our inspired teaching, and many of our faculty have been recognized with teaching excellence awards.

Curriculum Scene

Each semester, the Department of Geography offers dozens of courses on critical topics such as environmental sustainability, equity and social justice, climate change, globalization, and gender and development.

Our faculty actively participate in a number of interdisciplinary programs, including Environmental, International, and Women and Gender Studies.

Within Geography, students may pursue one of several majors. During the course of their education, many Geography majors complete an internship, or participate in faculty research projects. In Meteorology, there are numerous opportunities for real-time forecasting, and on-air broadcasting experience. A strong focus on undergraduate education is central to each of our major tracks.

Community Scene

As a medium-sized department, Geography is able to offer the benefits of a larger program while retaining a communal atmosphere.

Students interact closely with their faculty advisor, and a strong sense of community is fostered through our student organizations.

Departmental activities throughout the year bring together Geography faculty, graduate students, and majors.

Graduate Program Scene

The Department of Geography offers a Master’s-only graduate program, giving students the opportunity to work closely with faculty. The program offers both thesis and non-thesis options, and fully prepares graduates for professional positions or a Ph.D. program.

Graduates Scene

Undergraduate students who graduate from the Geography program are not only knowledgeable about their specific field, but receive a well-rounded liberal arts education. Their ability to understand and interact with colleagues from different disciplines provides a valuable asset in whatever career they choose to pursue.

Summary Scene

A diverse and research-active faculty, engaging classes, sense of community, academic rigor … all located in scenic Athens, an eclectic college town in the forested hills of southeastern Ohio.
