Waste Program

The Voinovich School has been making waves in waste for more than 25 years. In 1988, the School helped inform the legislative process that passed Ohio House Bill 592, a keystone bill in the state that established a more robust solid waste regulatory program creating solid waste districts, and increasing efforts to reduce, reuse, and recycle.

In recent years, the Voinovich School’s work in local and regional waste issues has expanded in large part due to the Appalachia Ohio Zero Waste Initiative (AOZWI), funded by the Sugar Bush Foundation, a supporting organization of the Ohio University Foundation. The School’s work with community partner Rural Action on AOZWI activities seeks to grow and support waste-related businesses in the region, support local waste infrastructure, engage communities to become more active participants in waste reduction, reduce the waste footprint at Ohio University, and teach students about zero waste principles and sustainability.  By working with Campus Recycling, the Office of Sustainability, Earth Day Every Day, and Environmental Studies, we are helping to make OHIO a zero waste campus. Additionally, OHIO Zero Waste has also partnered with Restore, Reuse, and the Athens-Hocking Recycling Center to engage the Athens-Hocking region in waste reduction and diversion conversations. The results of our fall 2015 campus survey on waste attitudes, behaviors and needs can be found here (pdf).

OHIO Campus Zero Waste Survey 2015

In Fall 2015, the OHIO Zero Waste Initiative at the Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs, in partnership with the Office of Sustainability and Campus Recycling, launched an electronic Campus Zero Waste Survey.  The purpose of the survey was to gauge attitudes and perceptions of waste reduction, recycling composting, and zero waste efforts on the Athens campus.  This survey was made possible the generosity of the Sugar Bush Foundation, supporting organization of the Ohio University Foundation, as part of the Appalachia Ohio Zero Waste Initiative. Click here to see the summary of the results in .pdf form. To view the full report in .pdf, click here. Please contact Elissa Welch, welche@ohio.edu with any questions regarding the research.
