Bobcat Student Orientation to host 4,000 new students

Sessions begin Thursday for transfer students

Incoming students will flood the Athens streets this Thursday and Friday as Bobcat Student Orientation kicks off for first-year transfer students. Sessions for first-year freshmen take place July 26 through Aug. 14.

More than 4,000 first-year students are expected to attend this year's orientation sessions.

That number includes more than 360 transfer students and about 3,700 freshmen. During the two-day sessions, students will have the chance to quell pre-college jitters by getting intimately acquainted with the university as they prepare for their first year on campus.

Throughout the morning of the first day of orientation, students will check into their residence halls, take placement tests, meet their advisers and learn about academic opportunities like the learning communities. The afternoon agenda includes walking tours, discussions and activities in Baker University Center. On the second day, students will attend a resource fair, receive financial aid information and tour residence halls.

"During orientation, faculty and student advisers address a variety of issues pertaining to incoming students," said Jenny Klein, director of orientation programs.

For many years Bobcat Student Orientation (formerly known as precollege) has been an Ohio University tradition, and is also anticipated by faculty and staff.

"This is an exciting time for students as they prepare for classes this fall. I am looking forward to meeting the Class of 2014 and their families during orientation," said Ryan Lombardi, dean of students.
