University to showcase student research projects April 10

Ohio University will showcase the original work of its students at the Student Research and Creative Activity Expo on Thursday, April 10. This year's Expo will be bigger than ever, with more than 800 participants from 56 departments and schools.

The annual event, held from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Convocation Center, will feature projects on topics such as new evidence for horned dinosaur evolution from the lost continent of Laramidia, the development of a mobile app for tracking physical rehabilitation patients, a Chinese calligraphy after-school program, a mobile art gallery and performance space and an investigation of why we yawn.

Ohio University hosts the Student Research and Creative Activity Expo annually to demonstrate the results of its student research, scholarship and creative activity inside and outside of the classroom.

Undergraduate, graduate student and medical student participants can choose to have their work reviewed by a panel of judges who award up to $200 in prize money to the top projects in various categories organized by discipline or related subjects. Presentations include live performances, interactive demonstrations, exhibits and posters.  

Area middle school and high school students will visit the event to learn about conducting research and creative activity, as well as specific research and education opportunities for Ohio University students.

The event, which is open to the university community and general public, will offer free pizza to attendees until 1 p.m.

In addition, the Expo will host two student contests on social media this year. Middle school and high school students can win prizes for posting photos to the Expo's Facebook page, Ohio University students can enter the chance to win a 5 lb. Hershey bar by tweeting a photo of themselves with a presenter to @OUStudentExpo with the hashtag #studentexpo.

The WOUB Center for Public Media will host a live broadcast of the event from noon to 1 p.m. on WOUB II, available to Athens-area Time Warner cable subscribers, and on CatVision. The program also can be viewed live online at

The Student Research and Creative Activity Expo is sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Research and Creative Activity and the Dean of the Graduate College, Office of the President, Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost and University Libraries.
