What you need to know about move-in weekend

The hustle and bustle of a busy move-in weekend is fast approaching for first-year and returning Ohio University students. Go Green Week events kick off Thursday, Aug. 22, and continue through Sunday, Aug. 25. While several fun and exciting activities are planned for students on OHIO's Athens Campus, the hard work of moving in to the residence halls still remains.

Here are some key information points to help make the move-in experience as smooth as possible.

Where am I going?

The roads that were closed over the summer months (and during Bobcat Student Orientation) due to construction projects across campus are expected to reopen in time for the move-in rush, with the exception of the north side lane of Park Place outside Alden Library. Officers with the Ohio University Police Department and staff members from Transportation and Parking Services will be on hand to help direct traffic to residence halls and answer questions about where you can unload your belongings. Signage will be posted around campus to guide you to the appropriate residential green.

Cars will be allowed to park adjacent to residence halls for 30 minutes to unload. Once you've unloaded your belongings, an OHIO staff member will help direct you to available parking lots.

  • Purple and dark green parking lots will be open and will not have a time restriction.
  • Other colored University lots will be open, but a 30-minute time restriction will be in place and a person must be near the vehicle at all times to move it if necessary.
  • Remember: There is NO parking permitted in fire lanes. You may stop your vehicle, but not park it.
  • For complete parking information, visit the Parking Services website and follow @ohiouparking on Twitter.

Residence hall move-in will be staggered alphabetically to allow ample time and space for unpacking and settling in. Please refer to the Arrival Guide for more information about when your specific time is scheduled.

Can I get a hand?

No doubt you might need some help during the move-in process. OHIO Go Green guides will be available to answer any questions and offer directions to campus buildings and parking lots. Student volunteers, including several coaches and athletes from the OHIO Bobcats sports teams, will be on hand to assist with move-in. These helpers will be available on Thursday, Aug. 22, and Friday, Aug. 23, only.

Additional support services include:

  • Water stations that will be set up on each green on Thursday and Friday to provide you with some hydration.
  • Ohio University IT support stations set up at Boyd, Nelson and Shively Halls to answer any computer or Internet questions that might arise while setting up in a new space. The stations will be available Thursday through Sunday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Additional support will be on hand at the Tech Depot in Baker University Center, Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

I'm hungry.

All that heavy lifting might work up an appetite. If hunger strikes, you can find food within reach at many of Ohio University Culinary Services' conveniently-located facilities:

  • Boyd Dining Hall (West Green) will begin serving with lunch on Thursday, Aug. 22.
  • Nelson Court (South Green) will begin serving with lunch on Thursday, Aug. 22.
  • Shively Court (East Green) will be open Saturday and Sunday beginning at 11 a.m. (Please note: Shively Court will be open Sunday-Friday once the semester officially begins).
  • Nelson Market (South Green) will be open beginning Aug. 22
  • Boyd Market (West Green) will be open beginning Aug. 22

  • West 82 Food Court (1st Floor, Baker University Center) will be open throughout Go Greek Week, including: 7:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday; Friday and Saturday 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m.

Culinary Services will be offering a special $7.50 (plus tax) cash price within all Dining Court locations for parents and guests throughout move-in weekend.
