Fall opening activities designed to welcome, prepare OHIO students


Ohio University’s fall semester kicks off Aug. 24, but the Athens Campus is already buzzing with activity as students are returning to their home away from home and University employees are gearing up for a slew of festivities designed to welcome and prepare them.

Some students, including student-athletes and this year’s resident assistants, have already returned to campus, and this week will see an influx of international students.

No matter if students are returning to Ohio University or just beginning their OHIO journey, the Bobcat family is committed to welcoming them with open arms and ensuring that they are prepared for fall semester. Offices throughout the Athens Campus will be offering a variety of activities, including orientation programs and social events, in the weeks leading up to the start of fall semester.

Here’s a snapshot of some of the upcoming events on the Athens Campus:

Monday, Aug. 10, through Monday, Aug. 17

International students will be arriving on the Athens Campus this week, and OHIO’s International Student and Faculty Services has a variety of activities planned from Aug. 10 through Aug. 22 to both welcome students and prepare them for classes. Friday, Aug. 14

Monday, Aug. 17

New Faculty Welcome – 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Baker University Center 240/242, co-sponsored by the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost and the Center for Teaching and Learning. For more information, visit https://www.ohio.edu/ctl/.

Tuesday, Aug. 18

New Teaching Assistant Orientation – 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a special program for international teaching assistants from 3 to 5 p.m., Baker University Center Ballroom A, sponsored by the Center for Teaching and Learning. For more information, visit https://www.ohio.edu/ctl/.

Wednesday, Aug. 19

Thursday, Aug. 20

Go Green Week festivities officially begin as OHIO’s residence halls open to first-year students on Aug. 20-21 and to returning students on Aug. 22.

Graduate Student Orientation – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Baker University Center Ballroom, hosted by the Graduate College. For more information, click here.

Transfer Student Orientation – Registration begins at 8 a.m. on the second floor of Baker University Center. For more information and a schedule, visit https://www.ohio.edu/uc/bso/schedule.cfm. This event is only for transfer students who did not attend orientation earlier in the summer.

Moonlight Movie (“Pitch Perfect 2”) – 9 p.m., South Beach on South Green and the West Green lawn. Co-sponsored by the Campus Involvement Center and University Libraries, this event is free and open to all students. Refreshments will be provided. In the event of inclement weather, this activity will be relocated to the Bobcat Student Lounge on the first floor of Baker University Center and the Baker University Center Theatre on the second floor.

Friday, Aug. 21 

First-Year Student Orientation – Registration begins at 8 a.m. on the second floor of Baker University Center. For more information and a schedule, visit https://www.ohio.edu/uc/bso/schedule.cfm. This event is only for first-year students who did not attend orientation earlier in the summer. 

Residence Hall Welcomes – 6 p.m. Information will be provided in students’ individual residence halls. Attendance is mandatory for first-year students living on the Athens Campus.

Class of 2019 Group Photo – 7 p.m. All first-year students will gather for a class photo that will be taken inside Peden Stadium.

Party at Ping – 8 to 11 p.m., Charles J. Ping Student Recreation Center, co-sponsored by Campus Recreation and the Campus Involvement Center. Free and open to all OHIO students and Ping members, this event is aimed at first-year students and is designed to help familiarize them with the Ping Center as well as Campus Recreation’s various departments. The evening will include food, games, inflatables on the front lawn of Ping, music, a photo booth, group fitness class demos, an opportunity to use the facility’s climbing wall, a chance to win free rounds of golf, and a special 8:30 p.m. performance by OHIO’s Marching 110. Tables on Campus Rec’s programs, including information on student employment opportunities and how to sign up for Intramural Sports, will be available, and many of the University’s Club Sports teams will be there to share information on how to get involved.

Saturday, Aug. 22

College Welcomes – 1 to 3 p.m. See sidebar for locations.

Comedy Show at the Convo, featuring Aidy Bryant – 8 p.m. (doors open at 7:30 p.m.), Convocation Center. An actress and comedian, Bryant joined NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” cast in the fall of 2012. Opening for Bryant will be Streeter Seidell, a comedian, writer, actor and television host who joined the writing staff at “Saturday Night Live” in 2014. This free event is being co-sponsored by the Campus Involvement Center, the University Program Council, the Black Student Cultural Programming Board, the Interfraternity Council, the Women’s Panhellenic Association and Student Senate.

Sunday, Aug. 23

This year’s Go Green Week festivities wrap up with Ohio University officially welcoming first-year students into the Bobcat family during a day filled with events that will serve as memorable moments in their OHIO experience.

Ohio University President Roderick J. McDavis will welcome the newest Bobcats into the OHIO community at the President’s Convocation for First-Year Students, which will begin at 2:30 p.m. at the Convocation Center. Attendance is mandatory for first-year students, and OHIO faculty and staff are encouraged to attend to share in this milestone marking the official start of incoming Bobcats’ academic journey at OHIO.

Immediately following the ceremony, President McDavis and OHIO’s Marching 110 will lead all first-year students in a spirited procession up Richland Avenue and through the College Gate at Court and Union Streets, officially inducting the Class of 2019 into the OHIO community.

Students are then invited to participate in the annual Campus Involvement Fair, which will be held on the College Green. Hosted by the Campus Involvement Center, the fair is designed to introduce students to the plethora of opportunities to get involved in Ohio University. An estimated 300 student organizations will take part in this year’s Campus Involvement Fair, which will be canceled in the event of inclement weather.
