Jefferson Marketplace grand opening festivities to be held Feb. 20-25

Less than a month after Ohio University Culinary Services debuted its new Jefferson Marketplace, the venue’s staff is gearing up for a week of grand opening festivities designed to introduce the on- and off-campus communities to this state-of-the-art culinary destination.

Culinary Services opened the new Jefferson Marketplace on Jan. 25 (see related article), unveiling the first-of-its-kind neighborhood marketplace on the Athens Campus. The marketplace is the result of an approximately $8.8 million renovation that completely revamped the traditional, all-you-care-to-eat Jefferson Dining Hall.

“We’ve seen a lot of success at the marketplace since it opened,” said Kent Scott, associate director of Auxiliaries Operations.

Among the marketplace’s most popular concepts and items are:

  • Brick City Deli, a New York-style deli featuring Boar’s Head meats and cheeses where customers can purchase custom-made sandwiches as well as sliced-to-order meats and cheeses. Brick City Deli utilizes an Electronic Point of Sale (ePOS) system that allows customers to place sandwich orders, designate a pick-up time and pay for their purchase – all online. That time-saving system has been very well received, according to Scott. The ePOS system is available by downloading Culinary Services’ free mobile app
  • Bubble tea offered at Steeped and Stirred, the marketplace’s tea and coffee room
  • Bulk foods section featuring 48 different products
  • A robust international foods section
  • Floral area offering a variety of flowers and items for special occasions

“The reaction from our customers has all been positive,” said Don Jackson, general manager of Jefferson Marketplace, who noted that many of the people visiting the venue for the first time are taking photos and calling their friends, amazed by all the venue’s offerings.

Jefferson Marketplace staff will continue that momentum and attract those who have yet to experience the new marketplace by hosting a week’s worth of grand opening festivities Monday, Feb. 20, through Saturday, Feb. 25.

Open to all, the grand opening festivities will include:

  • Complimentary Food Samples. Held throughout the week and escalating toward the end of the week, vendors who sell their products at the marketplace will be on hand sampling some of those products. Among those vendors is Pepsi, which will be sampling its new White Label Mountain Dew.
  • Giveaways. Culinary Services will be awarding free usable OHIO-themed coffee sleeves to the first 100 customers each day beginning at 7 a.m. Feb. 20, and Pepsi plans to give away a set of virtual reality goggles each day of the grand opening – just to name a few of the giveaways planned.
  • Chef Hari Nayak, culinary director of Café Spice, will be on hand to showcase his culinary skills and sign cookbooks on Thursday, Feb. 23. He will be providing samples of the Café Spice product lines as well as recording in the new Culinary Studio. That event will be filmed by Lecturer of Video Production Andie Walla’s Media Arts and Studies class, which is already holding classes inside the Culinary Studio.
  • Featured specials and discounts including, 10 percent off bubble teas and cold brew coffee, $1 off Brick City Deli combos and much more.

Jefferson Marketplace is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays; from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays; and from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays.
