August packed with activities to welcome students, faculty to OHIO


From orientation programs to opportunities to socialize, Ohio University is hosting a plethora of activities in the weeks leading up to start of fall semester to welcome new and returning OHIO students to the Bobcat family and prepare them for the academic year.

Those activities include:

International Student Arrival and Orientation

Hundreds of international students will begin arriving on the Athens Campus this week, with graduate international student arrival planned for Aug. 2-4 and undergraduate international student arrival slated for Aug. 13-15. 

OHIO’s International Student and Faculty Services has a variety of activities planned to both welcome students to Ohio University and the Athens community and to help them prepare for their coursework. Among those activities are orientation sessions. 

International Graduate Student Orientation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, in Baker University Center. The orientation day will begin in the Baker University Center Ballroom.

International Undergraduate Orientation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 17, in the Baker University Center Ballroom. 

In addition, International Student and Faculty Services will host an Off-Campus Housing Fair for incoming graduate students who are still looking for housing options. That event will be held on Friday, Aug. 5, in the Bobcat Student Lounge on the first floor of Baker University Center. 

Last academic year, the Ohio University community included more than 1,600 international students – 777 undergraduates and 825 graduate students. Those students hailed from 114 countries.

New Faculty Welcome and Faculty and Staff Convocation

In addition to welcoming Ohio University’s Class of 2020, the Ohio University community is gearing up to welcome an estimated 115 new faculty members to the Bobcat team. 

The Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost, in conjunction with the Center for Teaching and Learning, will be hosting a New Faculty Welcome event from 8:30 a.m. to 3:40 p.m. Monday, Aug. 15, in Baker University Center 240/242. For more information, visit https://www.ohio.edu/ctl/.

Ohio University President Roderick J. McDavis will address all OHIO faculty and staff during Faculty and Staff Convocation, which will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, in the Walter Hall Rotunda. President McDavis will deliver his annual State of the University address during the event.

New Teaching Assistant Orientation

OHIO’s Center for Teaching and Learning will welcome and educate new teaching assistants during an orientation slated for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, in Baker University Center Ballroom A. A special program designed specifically for international teaching assistants will be held that same day from 3 to 5 p.m. in Ballroom A. Graduate Student Orientation

Ohio University’s Graduate College will host an orientation session for incoming graduate students from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, in the Baker University Center Ballroom. Undergraduate Student Orientation

In an effort to foster academic integration and socialization for transfer and first-year students, the Office of Undergraduate Orientation Programs will be hosting orientation sessions for students who were unable to attend Bobcat Student Orientation earlier in the summer. 

Orientation for transfer students and their families and guests will be held on Thursday, Aug. 18. Registration begins at 8 a.m. on the second floor of Baker University Center, and activities will be held throughout the day and into the early evening.

Orientation for first-year students and their families and guests is slated for Friday, Aug. 19. Registration begins at 8 a.m. on the second floor of Baker University Center with activities to occur through the early evening.

Go Green Week Activities

OHIO’s Go Green Week festivities kick off with the opening of residence halls to first-year students Aug. 18-19 and to returning students on Aug. 20. Go Green Week activities include opportunities for new and returning students to socialize, have some fun, get acquainted with the Athens Campus and – for first-year students – to officially begin their OHIO experience.

Go Green Week activities include:

Thursday, Aug. 18

Movie Night – Ohio University’s Campus Involvement Center will be showing “Captain America: Civil War” at 9 p.m. in the Baker University Center Ballroom. This event is free and open to all students. Refreshments will be provided.

Friday, Aug. 19

Party at Ping – The Department of Campus Recreation invites all students to the Charles J. Ping Recreation Center from 8 to 11 p.m. for free food, fun and prizes. The evening will feature: 

  • A taco bar
  • Music provided by a DJ
  • Indoor activities such as casino games, a photo booth, laser tag, hamster balls, bungee basketball, and volleyball
  • Yard games, including corn hole, bocce ball, ladder golf and life-sized pong
  • Tables staffed by members of Campus Rec’s various departments who will be providing information on the department’s various programs as well as activities and giveaways
  • Prizes, giveaways and raffles from donors such as BodyBuilding.com, Cards Against Humanity, the Cleveland Browns, Chipotle, Homage, Pura Vida, OHIO Hockey and Sand Cloud; items to be given include Post Malone and Kane Brown concert tickets as well as tickets to the Scotty McCreery concert being hosted by OHIO’s Performing Arts and Concert Series on Sept. 8 at Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium. 

Saturday, Aug. 20

College Welcomes – Each college within OHIO’s academic community will hold welcome sessions at 1 p.m. for first-year students. See sidebar for location.

Class of 2020 Photo – For the second consecutive year, incoming first-year students will gather at OHIO’s Peden Stadium to take a group photo, capturing the first moment the Class of 2020 will come together as one. The photo shoot is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Comedy at the Convo, featuring Retta – Stand-up comedian and actress Retta will visit the Athens Campus for a free performance for all Ohio University students. Best known as Donna on NBC’s “Parks and Recreation,” Retta takes the stage at 8:30 p.m. in the Convocation Center. Her performance is being sponsored by the Campus Involvement Center and OHIO’s Division of Student Affairs. 

Sunday, Aug. 21   

President’s Convocation for First-Year Students – Go Green Week activities will conclude with an OHIO tradition celebrating the newest members of the Bobcat family. 

Ohio University President Roderick J. McDavis will deliver his annual President’s Convocation for First-Year Students address beginning at 2:30 p.m. in the Convocation Center. This year’s ceremony will mark a first for OHIO’s Class of 2020, celebrating the official start of these incoming Bobcats’ academic journey at Ohio University, and a last for President McDavis who will deliver his 13th and final Convocation for First-Year Students address.

Resident assistants will escort first-year students to the Convocation Center for the festivities. Attendance is mandatory for first-year students, and OHIO faculty and staff are encouraged to attend to share in this milestone for OHIO’s Class of 2020. 

Immediately following the ceremony, President McDavis and OHIO’s Marching 110 will lead all first-year students in a spirited procession up Richland Avenue and through the College Gate at Court and Union Streets, officially inducting the Class of 2020 into the OHIO community. 

Campus Involvement Fair – After proceeding through the College Gate, first-year students and all OHIO students are invited to participate in the annual Campus Involvement Fair, which will be held on College Green. Hosted by the Campus Involvement Center, the event will feature more than 300 of the University’s campus organizations. Representatives from those organizations will be available to provide information, answer questions and sign students up to participate in their groups. This event will be canceled in the event of inclement weather.
