OHIO seeks proposals for Innovation Strategy Cycle 2 funding

The following message was sent by Vice President for Research and Creative Activity Joseph Shields to Ohio University faculty and staff on Sept. 7, 2016.

Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to convey that the Request for Proposals (RFP) for Innovation Strategy Cycle 2 funding is now available at the Innovation Strategy website

The Innovation Strategy was initiated in 2013 to strengthen the University’s engagement with major societal challenges in the 21st century. The strategy includes a program of investments to incentivize collaborations across college/planning unit boundaries that leverage interdisciplinary approaches necessitated by the complex problems of our time. Four broad portfolios of topical areas are identified for potential investment, with support that can encompass the full spectrum of the University’s activities— including teaching and learning, research and scholarship, creative activity, and the operational functions of the University.

The structure of the proposal and award process is similar to that employed in Cycle 1, and the RFP and accompanying FAQs should be consulted for details. All faculty and staff are eligible to participate on proposals, and students and external collaborators can participate as co-investigators. The proposal process begins with submission of a Letter of Intent due on Thursday, Oct. 13, 2016.

Support for Proposers. The Research Division, in collaboration with the academic colleges and regional and extension campuses, will assist faculty, staff, and students who wish to participate in the proposal process. The division is sponsoring information and networking sessions to help interested individuals in developing their ideas and projects. The sessions will be held on Monday, Sept. 19, and Monday, Sept 26, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room in the Multicultural Center, second floor of Baker University Center.

In addition, the Research Division will host a Collaborative Projects Workshop to discuss considerations and tools for working on large interdisciplinary teams. The event will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 3, in the Multipurpose Room in the Multicultural Center, second floor of Baker University Center. The workshop is limited to 50 attendees; individuals must RSVP to research@ohio.edu.

During the first cycle of Innovation Strategy funding, Ohio University made major awards to four teams and provided developmental funding in the form of planning and seed grants to 12 additional groups. Information on the Cycle 1 award recipients is available at the Innovation Strategy website.

General questions about the Innovation Strategy program and funding process can be directed to research@ohio.edu.

Sincerely,

Joseph Shields
