Facilities Management and Safety recognizes July Employees of the Month

Ohio University Facilities Management and Safety (FMS) has announced the July 2019 awardees of its Employee of the Month program, which recognizes exceptional performance by Facilities employees.

All OHIO employees are invited to nominate FMS employees for this award using the nomination form on the FMS website. Nominations will be accepted at any time during the year.

This month’s winners are Elizabeth Harris (Bargaining Unit) and Amy Simons (Classified Staff).

Harris, a second shift custodial worker in Seigfred Hall, was nominated by Molly Matthews, the parent of a current OHIO student, who wrote:

“Elizabeth was working on a summer evening last summer in Seigfred. My daughter and I were scheduled for a campus tour the following morning, but my daughter wanted to get more comfortable with the campus before we took a group tour,” Matthews said. “Elizabeth knew the building and the art program so well. She was able to explain the studio spaces and pointed out so many things, that she relaxed my daughter and inspired her to look further into the programs at OHIO.

“She took time to explain anything my daughter asked. It wasn't until we came across her coworker, that we found out Elizabeth had just spent almost her entire lunch break giving us a tour. When I apologized, she seemed genuinely pleased to spend it helping my daughter. Elizabeth had extensive knowledge, kindness and patience. She gave the best tour of any we took on the many college campuses we visited. Her calm, open attitude is what I remember loving about people in Athens during my college days. My daughter stated that it was Elizabeth's tour that swayed her decision toward going to OHIO.”

A closer look at Elizabeth Harris:

What do you do in your spare time? I farm and take care of my more than 30 goats.

What do you do in your spare time? Go to county fairs and tractor shows inside and outside of the state.

What is on your bucket list? Attend the Mackinac Bridge Antique Tractor Crossing in Michigan and cross the bridge on my 1967 Case 5406 Air Force tug tractor. I also want to see one of my goats named grand champion at a fair.

Simons, who serves as accounting support for the Facilities Management and Safety Team, was nominated by Dr. Elaine Goetz, director of sustainability at OHIO, who credits Simons for advising her office on a myriad of unusual purchases and often making them on their behalf.

“Amy handles all of the communications, data entry and paperwork related to various odd purchases and audits, which sometimes requires many emails and forms,” Dr. Goetz said. “It would be very difficult for our office to function without her assistance and I'm grateful for her every time I need to renew a membership, an online tool or go to a meeting or conference.

“She is very organized and detail oriented. I know that when she is taking care of my purchases, she will follow through to make sure the purchase is completed. If I forget to submit something, she gently reminds me. She also is very knowledgeable. In the rare instance where she doesn't know the answer, she knows who to check with. Amy is very helpful and friendly and is easy to work with. She has the patience of a saint.”

A closer look at Amy Simons:

What is your role at OHIO? I take care of all the work order billings, licensing, memberships renewals and travel arrangements for our staff. I also set up purchase orders for service agreement work and help setup and issue campus notices for FM&S and Design and Construction.

What is your family like? It’s just my husband Gary and I and our fur baby, Rocco, a chihuahua we adopted. We are a happily married couple who likes to kick back and enjoy life. We lead a pretty simple life.

What do you like most about your job? That I can be a resource for my colleagues and help customers. If I made someone’s day go a little smoother, then I feel like I’ve accomplished something special that day. And of course, we do have fun here.

What do you do in your spare time? My husband and I like to ride our Harley motorcycle. We pick random places to go and eat at with no directions or place in mind. We love meeting new people who enjoy riding as well. I like to fish, camp, workout and spend time with The Roc, our chihuahua. My husband is retired, so on my days off, I like to spend time with him. We feel like we have different lives at times, because he’s doing his retirement thing and I’m working.

What is on your bucket list? I want to travel to the Grand Canyon.

How has OHIO helped you in your career development? There are many opportunities here at Ohio University from online courses to training sessions that we as employees can complete. It’s all here for us.

What advice do you have for prospective OHIO candidates? Keep a positive attitude, keep your head high and smile!

What is your favorite part about working at OHIO? It’s a solid place to work with great people. And what can I say, the campus is beautiful.

Tell us something we don’t know about you? I chew lots of gum.
