Teacher Licensure Information

Ohio University's The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education, in collaboration with other colleges within the University, has developed programs to prepare educators for licensure in the state of Ohio. All programs that lead to licensure are accredited at the state and national level.

Ohio Assessments for Educators: $105 each test, each attempt

Graphic Header: Steps to Earning a Teaching License
  1. Complete Professional Internship (    
  2. Send Ohio Department of Education current background check directly from institution that completed the check. (
  3. Make sure degree is officially conferred (happens about 1 month after graduation).(
  4. Pass all required Ohio Assessment for Educator (OAE) tests and have scores reported to Ohio University(
  5. Pay all fees and balances due to Ohio University (
  6. Create SAFE account (
  7. Apply for 4 year resident educator license (
  8. Wait patiently. Process can take several weeks. (
  9. Print out license from SAFE account.
  10. Go make a difference!


Note: Ohio University programs lead to licensure in Ohio. Other states may require additional steps, such as more coursework or assessments. If you plan to seek licensure outside of Ohio after completing an Ohio University program, please contact the Department of Education within that state.
