Message from the Dean

A Message from Dean Renée A. Middleton

dean bricks headshot smallHappy New Year! I hope that you had a wonderful break and spent the holiday season surrounded by friends, family, and those most important to you. I also hope that you had a chance to relax and recharge after a busy semester and that you’re as eager to begin the new semester as I am. The year 2018 will be what we decide to make it! Let’s focus on all that is good and right in the world: truth, knowledge, learning, charity, choice, faith, family, and so much more. We do have the power to change the world, and education is the key!

The start of a semester is often an exciting yet hectic time, especially after the holidays. From new classes to New Year’s resolutions, you may have a lot on your plate in the coming weeks and months. I encourage you to remain focused on your academic goals and to forge ahead on the positive path that you have chosen. It is easy to feel overwhelmed at this time of year, but I am confident in your ability to juggle priorities and responsibilities.

With that in mind, there are a number of events I would like to invite you to this semester:

  • The Patton Party will be held Tuesday, Jan. 16, as we cheer on the Ohio University Men’s Basketball Team against Toledo. The pre-game party will begin at 5:15 p.m. in the Convocation Center’s Hall of Fame, where you will find pizza, refreshments, and plenty of Patton Pride! Please wear a Patton College T-shirt and show OHIO what our College is made of!
  • The Violet L. Patton Lecture Series, meanwhile, will be held Tuesday, Feb. 6, in McCracken Hall (room 210) from 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Ohio University alumna Dr. Margaret Zoller Booth—dean of the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University and professor of Educational Foundations, Leadership & Policy—will serve as keynote speaker. Dr. Booth received her Ph.D. in Education from The Patton College in 1991. Lunch will be provided.
  • In addition, we will host another Dinner with the Dean on Monday, February 12, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in McCracken Hall (room 104). This event will allow you to ask questions and voice concerns about The Patton College, and you are more than welcome to bring a guest. Food will be provided.

As you can see, there are plenty of things to be excited about this semester!

As you navigate coursework and extracurricular activities, I would also encourage you to remain knowledgeable about current events and passionate about issues that impact communities far and wide, from Southeast Ohio to the other side of the globe. As members of The Patton College, we are CALLED to LEAD! That means listening to each other, respecting each other, and working together to improve the lives of others. I have full confidence in your ability to lead by example and to be model members of our community.

If you ever need anything or would like to discuss a topic of interest or concern, please visit me during my office hours on Tuesdays from 3-5 p.m. or Fridays from 9-11 a.m. Contact Ivy Crockron ( to schedule an appointment.

If you would like some Patton College swag, we now have an Affinity Shop in the Bobcat store with items including Cutter & Buck clothing, water bottles/tumblers, CALLED to LEAD t-shirts and garden flags, and more. Go to

As always, please follow our social media accounts on Twitter (@OUPattonCollege) and Facebook for updates on the latest events and news from around the College.

Each year brings with it the promise of hope and renewed energy to achieve all things.

Let's make 2018 our best year yet!
