Diabetes Awareness Month activities scheduled for Athens

Nov 3, 2016

November is national Diabetes Awareness Month, and the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, the Diabetes Institute, and other university offices and community partners have put together a full schedule of events in Athens to raise awareness and share information with the local community.

Southeastern Ohio is especially hard-hit by diabetes, with higher rates of incidence than many other parts of the country. Nationwide, diabetes affects about one American in 11, and the incidence is rising.

By taking part in one or more of these November events, you can learn more about diabetes, your own risk level and available resources, while helping spread the word about this damaging disease.

A centerpiece of this year’s Diabetes Month activities in Athens is the Nov. 19 Diabetes Expo, where attendees will receive a wide array of free educational and health care services. The event is designed for those with diabetes, at risk for the disease or just concerned about their health. Attractions will include:

  • Food demonstrations and sampling
  • Cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure screenings
  • Opportunities to talk one-on-one with diabetes experts
  • Diabetes support group and peer support information
  • Kids’ activities
  • Diabetes risk test
  • Free T-shirts for the first 50 people

Some vendors will also be on hand to demonstrate products such as insulin pumps.
