Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine is welcoming two prestigious new members to its advisory board, who will bring, in the words of board Chair David R. Scholl, Ph.D., “expanded capabilities and expertise, embracing new perspectives.”
Paul H. Grundy, M.D., is an expert on population health and health care transformation, while Peter J. Rea, Ph.D., provides guidance in corporate ethics for a leading international firm. Both have recently accepted invitations to join the college advisory board, with Rea accepting in December and Grundy in January.
“I am so pleased that Drs. Grundy and Rea have agreed to join our college advisory board,” said Heritage College Executive Dean Ken Johnson, D.O. “Dr. Grundy’s role as one of the world’s most effective advocates for integrated primary care and primary care research is a wonderful fit with our college’s mission. And Dr. Rea’s accomplished record in both higher ed and high-tech industry make for a wide-angle perspective the board will benefit from hearing.”
Grundy, who was keynote speaker at the 2016 Ohio Osteopathic Symposium, is known as the “Godfather of the Patient-Centered Medical Home.” He serves as global director of healthcare transformation for HealthTeamWorks, a nonprofit that provides health care transformation strategies and resources for practices, groups and networks.
He has spent four decades focused on population health, including more than 17 years with the IBM corporation. Grundy, who was also a founding member of the IBM Industry Academy, retired in January as chief medical officer for IBM’s Healthcare Life Science Industry.
Grundy is a winner of numerous awards including the Patient-Centered Primary Care Collaborative’s Barbara Starfield Award; the National Committee for Quality Assurance’s Quality Award; and the Sappington Memorial Award from the American College of Occupational Environmental Medicine. He is founding president of the PCPCC.
Grundy serves as an adjunct professor for both the University of California, San Francisco, and the University of Utah School of Medicine. He is a member of National Academy of Science’s National Academy of Medicine, the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education’s board of directors and the national advisory board of the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education.
A retired senior diplomat with the rank of minister consular, U.S. State Department, Grundy has served under four U.S. presidents.
In comments to the advisory board during a recent retreat, Johnson noted that Grundy was one of the very earliest advocates for the model of integrated, advanced medical care embodied in the patient-centered medical home concept. “He’s not only nationally known, but internationally known,” Johnson said. “He does work in Ireland, England, Denmark and really around the world – he’s working on primary care internationally.”
Rea is vice president of integrity and ethics at Parker Hannifin Corporation, a global leader in motion and control technologies with global headquarters in Cleveland. He was hired in 2012 to fill this newly created position, which aims to preserve Parker’s reputation and protect its financial strength by helping individuals and teams perform with integrity at a high level, despite pressure and uncertainty.
He was the founding Burton D. Morgan Chair for Entrepreneurial Studies at Ashland University and founding director of Baldwin-Wallace University’s Center for Innovation and Growth.
Rea’s published books include “Exception to the Rule: The Surprising Science of Character-based Culture and Performance,” written with Alan Kolp and Jamie Stoller; “Integrity is a Growth Market” and “Leading with Integrity” with Kolp; and “Strategic Planning: A Practical Guide” with Dr. Harold Kerzner.
Johnson recalled that when he talked with Grundy about other potential board members, “he said we should attract someone from industry, particularly an industry not medicine, and maybe even engineering” – a profile Rea fits nicely. As a former center director at Baldwin Wallace, he added, Rea “stepped from higher education into industry, so he really understands both of those. And being Cleveland-based is really helpful for a connection to our campus there.”
The Heritage College’s advisory board advances the college and supports its executive dean and leadership. This includes providing a big-picture, forward-looking perspective from different vantage points; giving deans input and feedback; promoting philanthropic support; promoting the college and enhancing its national prominence; and fostering a culture of innovation and creative problem-solving.
