What: Medical Academy Discovery Series

Hands-on camp for central Ohio high schoolers interested in health care careers

When: June 19-22, 2018 (8:30 a.m.-4 p.m.)

Where: Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine at Dublin

6775 Bobcat Way, Dublin, OH 43016

Approximately 50 students from 25 central Ohio high schools will explore health care careers this week during the Medical Academy Discovery Series at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine at Dublin. The program begins with a four-day camp filled with interactive learning activities June 19-22, followed by quarterly enrichment activities during the upcoming school year.

Throughout the summer camp, high schoolers will work alongside medical students from the Heritage College as they participate in interactive demonstrations of human anatomy and physiology, practice hands-on clinical skills and techniques, and work with simulated patients. Medical content experts from a range of disciplines at OhioHealth, the signature sponsor and program partner for the Medical Academy, also will actively engage with students through a number of scheduled activities. The Heritage College and OhioHealth have long been partners in training medical students and residents. In 2012, the two institutions announced an expansion of their relationship, when OhioHealth was named preeminent education partner for the Heritage College, Dublin, which opened in 2014.

The Medical Academy places a strong emphasis on the team-based nature of modern medicine, as well as the growing need for qualified men and women to fill many different health care roles, to build the pipeline of future health professionals in central Ohio. Students who have taken part in the program in the past three years have given it enthusiastic reviews, with many saying the experience helped affirm and strengthen their intention to enter health care professions.

On Friday, June 22, between 10 a.m.-3 p.m., students will take part in a range activities dealing with emergency response medicine, including simulations surrounding distracted driving and the resulting accidents it can cause. During Friday’s sessions, representatives from OhioHealth EMS/Ambulance, MedFlight of Ohio, Washington Township Fire Department,  the Dublin Police Department and Ohio University’s Tantrum Theater will be on site, making this day perhaps the most visual environment for stories. Media are invited to attend this session or any others during the four-day camp. A complete schedule is available upon request.
