Medical Student Research Activity Registration
Per Heritage College Policy 7.11, all medical students must register their research projects/activity with the Heritage College Office of Research and Grants prior to beginning the project.
Research Activity Process
Like most things, conducting research involves many processes. The Office of Research and Grants can help students navigate through each step of the Research Activity Process, but it is very important that students understand the importance of each step involved. This guide will provide basic information and helpful hints as students navigate through the Research Activity Process.
Training for Human Subject Protection
Each research team member, including students, must complete human subject protection training. A faculty or staff member who has HIPAA training or prior research experience is still required to complete the human subject protection training.
Students are required to complete 5 CITI Trainings : Human Subjects Research (HSR) or Animal Care and Use (ACU) training (required for IRB or IACUC submission); Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training; Conflict of Interest (COI) Training, Good Clinical Practice (GCP) course; and Faculty, Administrators and Students Information Privacy & Security (IPS.
Ohio University has both Provider HIPAA Privacy Standards & Procedures and Health Plan HIPAA Privacy Standards & Procedures . These standards apply to Protected Health Information (“PHI”) generated by or on behalf of an Ohio University designed health care component as subject to HIPAA. These HIPAA Privacy standards describe how Ohio University’s designated health care components will maintain the confidentiality, integrity, and appropriate use and disclosure of confidential PHI.

Students are required to obtain approvals from both the research site (if conducting research outside of an Ohio University campus) and Ohio University. Information and resources can be found at the Ohio University Office of Research Compliance website or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
Medical Student Travel Awards
Medical Student Travel Awards will support conference travel, up to $500 for domestic travel and up to $750 for international travel, to present research findings. Students must be first author on the research poster/presentation. The awards are limited to one per fiscal year (July 1-June 30), per student. Awards are granted based on availability of funds and at the discretion of the Office of Research and Grants. The Call for Proposals is currently closed.
Medical Student Research Seed Funding Grants
Medical Student Research Seed Funding Grants (Seed Funding Grants) are intended to provide support for medical students to gain experience in research methodologies and conduct. The maximum award is $3,000 and all funding will be awarded on a competitive basis. The Call for Proposals is currently closed.
Ohio University Vice President for Research & Creative Activity Funding Opportunities
The Office of the Vice President for Research and Creative Activity oversees several Internal Award program to support the research, scholarship and creative activity of faculty, staff and students.
Biostatistical assistance is available to Heritage College faculty, staff, students, and residents in the areas of statistical and data analyses, research design methods and hypotheses testing. Assistance is provided for statistics sections of grant proposals and manuscripts.
Information regarding research seminars occuring throughout the Heritage College and Ohio University is available on the Research Seminars page. Additionally, Heritage College faculty, staff and students are encouraged to nominate speakers for the Office of Research and Grants Seminar Series.

Summer Research Opportunities
Many research and scholarly opportunities exist for medical students between years 1 and 2. A list of opportunities can be accessed using the button below. Students may also find summer research opportunities by conducting their own search.
The Summer Research Experience Application and Approval Guide provides a detailed step-by-step process for receiving Heritage College approval for your summer research experience and ensures professional and general liability insurance coverage during the summer. Office of Research and Grants approval is required by all students conducting research in the summer regardless of where the research activities are taking place. Failure to obtain approval from the Office of Research and Grants could result in your inability to publish or present your work at a conference and could result in a Professionalism Form due to disregard of policies and procedures.
Students participating in research activities must complete a Summer Research Experience Approval Form.
The submission of this form
the approval process and notifies the Office of Research and Grants of your intent to conduct research during the summer. Students will work with the Office of Research and Grants staff to complete all required paperwork and obtain Ohio University Office of Research Compliance approval as needed.
Summer Research Experience Approval Forms are due APRIL 15.
Research and Scholarly Advancement Fellowship (RSAF)
RSAF is a summer fellowship program that provides an introduction to scholarly work for osteopathic medical students working together with a member of the Heritage College faculty or affiliate.

Eli Lilly Medical Student Rotation
Heritage College medical students have an exciting opportunity to participate in the Medical Student Elective Rotation Program at Eli Lilly and Co. in Indianapolis, IN. The Heritage College is one of only four medical schools with an exclusive agreement to provide this opportunity to its students! The Rotation Brochure and the Processes and Expectations documents provide more information about the rotation structure and application procedures. Students participating in the Eli Lilly Medical Student Rotation will register for OCOM 8944 for the duration of the rotation.
Students who wish to pursue research or scholarly activities but who do not seek dedicated time or academic credit should contact the Office of Reseach and Grants for guidance.
Dual Degree Programs
In addition to the traditional medical degree, students pursuing their medical education at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine have several additional educational opportunities.
