Mobile Media Innovation Modules

Mobile Media Innovation Modules: A two-week, broad-based study on the mobile landscape that can be applied in many mass communication courses.

This teaching module on mobile application design and development was developed by the Scripps College of Communication with the expert knowledge of Sian Morson, author of Designing for iOS. The six modules provide approximately six hours of instruction into all things mobile. The modules were recently updated in Summer 2016 to provide the most up-to-date information on this emerging platform for delivery of content, information and media.

According to a 2015 survey by the Pew Research Center, fully 92% of American adults own a cellphone; 67% own a smartphone. While mobile phones have become the ubiquitous tool of today’s students, many students have limited familiarity with the mobile marketplace, the use of mobile as a delivery device and how to create products and applications that are sustainable. We observed this directly with our first class of Scripps Innovation Challenge teams and their solutions and created the mobile module to address this gap.

The learning outcomes built into these modules include:

  • Understand the history of mobile development in the United States
  • Describe the major media companies in the mobile marketplace and their market/strategies
  • Understand audience and the use of mobile applications as delivery mechanisms
  • Learn about social media platforms, journalism and other content on mobile
  • Understand business models for commercialization of apps and mobile content
  • Understand the development process for apps and who is part of the creative team
  • Learn tools and strategies for project management

The mobile module version 1.0 was implemented in Spring 2013 across six courses as a way to “hack the curriculum” and provide just-in-time knowledge of emerging technologies to our students. From courses in magazine publishing to broadcasting capstones in journalism and infrastructure courses in information and telecommunication systems, faculty members in the Scripps College of Communication have used the modules to keep students up to date.

We invite faculty members to use one or more of the modules as a way to deepen students’ knowledge and understanding of the mobile platform:
