Congratulations to Sarah Minkin, Holly Strickland, and Glen Gaither for winning first place in the Voinovich School's categories at this year's Student Expo in the Convocation Center on Thursday, April 11.

Strickland and Gaither's project, titled "An Examination of the Characteristics of Appalachian Students and First-Generation College Students: Identifying Retention Strategies that Span These Student Groups," was a qualitative study, examining the first semester worth of data from the Russ College of Engineering and Technology's retention rate of Appalachian and first generation college students. Strickland and Gaither were mentored by Dr. Holly Raffle and plan to continue this research with subsequent data from future semesters. Strickland is a graduating senior with a major in Psychology and a minor in Biological Sciences, and Gaither is a first-year Master of Public Administration student.

Minkin's project, titled "The Garden as a Classroom: Cultivating Sustainability Awareness at the West State Street Research Site," sought to enhance sustainability education for elementary school students and hopefully for Ohio University students as well. Minkin is a first-year graduate student in the Environmental Studies program and was mentored by Dr. Art Trese. She hopes her thesis will build off of this research.
