For over 20 years, the Ohio Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Ohio University's Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs has helped and supported existing and new small businesses in Athens, Hocking, Meigs, and Perry Counties. SBDC assists small businesses in business plan development, marketing, financial assistance, as well as other consulting services.

When Ohio University alum David Carter had a vision for a new small business, he sought assistance from the SBDC. The product was Digital Edge Sports. Founded in June 2011, Digital Edge Sports is a sports marketing firm that creatively uses technology to connect teams, brands, and fans. They specialize in sports marketing, sports sponsorship, digital technology, and sports technology. The company is based in Athens, Ohio creating a strong affiliation with Ohio University's Sports Administration program and is led by former athletes, sports executives, and business leaders.

By working with SBDC and Director Shawn Mallett, Carter was able to refine his
business model, set up the business, find source funding opportunities, and
receive counseling on strategic planning and growth strategy.
Carter states, "Shawn worked directly with me from idea conceptualization, capital fundraising, product development/launch, and now market expansion. His direct involvement helped take our 'idea' and bring it to life and helped us secure over $80,000 in Growth Grants and $125,000 in private investment." He adds, "Shawn's work kept me focused on the key areas of our business model. We would not be in existence today without his on-going support."

Their newest project, the Jersey Watch Network, is an interactive online sports
network that provides a digital platform for youth sports organizations. Jersey Watch Network provides free dynamic websites for youth sports organizations to engage parents and excite young athletes. Carter states, "
We plan on growing our Jersey Watch platform throughout Ohio in 2013 and across the nation in coming years. We're currently working with the SBDC on how we accelerate this growth in a sustainable manner. The top priority is fine-tuning our business model."
