Ohio University offers Balkans study abroad program in environmental peacebuilding

Austin Ambrose
January 11, 2017

The Ohio University Balkans Environmental Peacebuilding and Sustainability three-week academic expedition opened up its registration for the 2017 trip. Participants will visit Washington D.C., Albania, Kosovo and Montenegro.

A combination of lectures and site visits in regional cities and hikes along the Peaks of Balkans Trail are a few of the activities of the trip. Students will gain a personal experience in cross-ethnic communities living together in peace and see how entrepreneurship and ecotourism are reshaping modes for sustainable development.

Through this experience, students will get to partake in the “highlander mountain culture,” through their traditional organic cuisine, music, dance, clothing, architecture, and rugged way of life. Students will stay in ecotourism guesthouses with local families, and meet people who work in environmental peace building every day.

Information for the program is:
Date: May 14 – June 5, 2017
Cost: Seven credits of tuition, plus program fee and airfare
More info at: https://www.ohio.edu/global/goglobal/programs/balkans.cfm or http://peaceparkexpeditions.org
REGISTRATION DEADLINE: February 15, 2017

This program satisfies two class requirements (including the capstone) of the Environmental Studies Undergraduate Certificate, through the three Environmental Studies program class built into the trip.

It is open to undergraduates and graduate students from Ohio University and other U.S. universities (all students eligible for in-state tuition.) Students in Global Studies and other programs that require longer overseas stays as part of their degree or certificate requirements can work with program co-leaders to explore internships with local partners after the formal in-country portion of the program ends.

This program is a partnership with International Peace Park Expeditions and Ohio University. This year’s expedition co-leaders are highly experienced experts in environmental peacebuilding, ecotourism, sustainability and outdoor education:  Danny Twilley of OHIO’s Recreation Sport Pedagogy Program and Todd Walters, executive director of International Peace Park Expeditions.
