Student Expo, Expo Pitch Competition offers opportunities to share work, compete for awards

January 25, 2018

Voinovich School Master of Public Administration, Environmental Studies, Undergraduate Research Scholars and student employees should consider joining undergraduate and graduate students from all programs and schools across campus to participate in the 2018 Student Research & Creative Activity Expo on April 12, 2018.

The 15th annual Expo, held at Ohio University’s Convocation Center, is a chance for students to present their original work. The annual event attracts more than 800 student presenters from dozens of disciplines. More than 2,000 students, faculty, staff, community members and local middle school and high school students attend to learn more about how Ohio University students are engaged in research, scholarship and creative activity. Posters, exhibits, performances, film screenings and other presentation formats are welcome.

In addition to all the other awards offered at the event, the Voinovich School will offer graduate and undergraduate awards in two categories: environment and public affairs. Awards will be given for the best presentations in each category: $150 (1st prize) and $75 (2nd prize).

In order to help students prepare their posters and presentations, the Voinovich School will offer a series of sessions on designing and creating an effective poster. Dates and times for these sessions will be announced soon. Additionally, all Voinovich School graduate and undergraduate students who are participating in the Voinovich School sessions will have their posters funded by the school. Look for future details and deadlines.

The Student Expo is sponsored by the Office of the Research Division, Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost, Office of the President and the University Libraries.

More information about the event and event registration is available at www.ohio.edu/studentexpo/. Registration closes Feb. 28 at midnight and will be capped at 850 presenters, so register soon!

Expo Pitch Competition

On the same day, students can also compete for cash prizes by joining in the Expo Pitch Competition, which allows students to pitch business or innovation ideas to experts from the venture capital, business and banking professions. Students do not have to register for the Expo to participate in the pitch competition.

To qualify for the competition, students must write and submit a one-page summary of their idea by April 4. If chosen as a finalist, the student will prepare a 3-minute pitch, present it to a panel of business professionals and answer questions from the panel about the presentation. Contestants are also encouraged to attend a workshop to help them prepare for their presentation. Workshops will be from 3:05-4 p.m on March 28 in Tupper 104B or March 29 in ARC Room 140.

Cash prizes will be awarded to winners in each category, and OHIO’s Center for Entrepreneurship and TechGROWTH Ohio will recognize winners in an article about the competition. The cash prize amounts for 2017 winners were $1,200 for first place, $600 for second place tie and $300 for third place. Prizes amounts remain undecided for 2018. At the discretion of the judges, successful technology pitches with the potential for commercialization may receive an offer to consult with TechGROWTH.

Competition finalists will be notified by April 6. For more information about the competition and to register, check out the ExpoPitch website.
