Graduate and undergraduate students from all programs can compete for cash prizes by entering the Expo Pitch Competition, where students pitch business or innovation ideas to experts from the venture capital, business and banking professions. The competition takes place on April 12, in conjunction with the 2018 Student Research & Creative Activity Expo.

“It’s a valuable experience, the opportunity to pitch in front of real, seasoned entrepreneurs and investors, and not a lot of college students get that experience,” said Paul Benedict, an instructor in the OHIO College of Business and the organizer of the competition.

To qualify for the competition, students must write and submit a one-page summary of their idea by April 4. If chosen as a finalist, the student will prepare a three-minute pitch, present it to a panel of business professionals and answer questions from the panel about the presentation. The panel consists of three to five judges and includes business founders, CEOS and other entrepreneurial experts.

Contestants are encouraged to attend a workshop to help them prepare for their presentation. Workshops will be from 3-4 p.m. on March 28 in Tupper 104B or March 29 in ARC Room 140. Contact Paul Benedict at benedict@ohio.edu for additional help or with questions.

“We would very much like to see opportunities to help students take these ideas and make them real,” Benedict said. “There are quite a few examples of businesses started by students at OHIO while they were students that have moved on and continued to do really cool stuff.”

Cash prizes will be awarded to the winners, and OHIO’s Center for Entrepreneurship and TechGROWTH Ohio will recognize winners in an article about the competition. The prize amounts are $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place and $50 for third and fourth place. At the discretion of the judges, successful technology pitches with the potential for commercialization may receive an offer to consult with TechGROWTH.

Competition finalists will be notified by April 6. For more information about the competition and to register, check out the Expo Pitch Competition website
