Survey and Data Services


The Voinovich School provides a full range of survey research assistance. Our services include: sampling plans, instrument design, implementation support, and data analysis. The Voinovich School also has psychometric expertise to assess the readability, reliability, and validity of survey instruments through the use of standard readability formulas, classical test theory and item response theory. The School has specialized software programs for creating and distributing fully customizable printed and internet surveys. Methodologies include self-administered pen and paper and mail surveys, telephone and internet surveys.

Data Services:

The Voinovich School provides data, research and statistical consulting services to nonprofits, state and local agencies, businesses, and researchers. This includes analyzing publicly available data, survey data and clients’ proprietary data. Data is utilized for a variety of purposes including to inform planning and decision-making; determine market penetration, gaps, and potential opportunities; pinpoint options for process improvement, and identify underserved populations from secondary population, health, economic and education data. We also develop customized data visualization tools including dashboards and interactive websites that enable users to explore complex data and discover relationships.

Roster Verification

At the request of the Ohio Department of Education (ODE), Ohio University’s Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs completed year two of a three-year project examining the implementation of teacher-student data link/roster verification in Ohio. In this second year of the project, the researchers conducted a survey of all principals and teachers who participated in the roster verification process for the 2012-13 academic year (Spring 2013).

Financial Literacy Survey

At the request of the Ohio Department of Education (ODE), the Ohio Education Research Center conducted a survey of Ohio high schools’ implementation of financial literacy education, as required by Ohio Revised Code Section 3313.603(C)(7). The survey was developed to address the following questions:

  • Are districts integrating the study of financial literacy into their high school curriculum?
  • What types of financial literacy curriculum and instruction are Ohio’s school districts providing in order to meet the state requirements?
  • What subjects and grades have financial literacy content standards embedded in the curriculum?
  • How long is the financial literacy content taught?
  • What type(s) of licensure do teachers who are teaching financial literacy hold?
  • Are Ohio school districts partnering with other entities (e.g. banks) to deliver financial literacy content?
  • Are there any differences in the financial literacy content and/or delivery methods by district type?
  • What are some exemplary financial literacy education programs in Ohio?

E-Check Customer Satisfaction Survey

Since 2000, the Voinovich School has conducted an annual satisfaction survey for the Ohio E-Check vehicle emissions testing program. Ohio EPA requires vehicles registered in 7 northern counties to undergo emissions testing as a condition of registration and this survey asks motorists about their experiences with the testing process. Funded by Envirotest Systems Corporation.
